Active Learning- Kit Based Teaching

Culturally Responsive Community Outreach // Targeting Individuals, Families, and Communities

Teen Take Heart incorporates an impactful, sustainable, and measurable curriculum that addresses the urgent need in our communities for health heart promotion and disease prevention. The curriculum is an interactive, hands-on, web-and kit-based approach delivered by educators who have gone through training for delivery of the curriculum.

Each of the four Teen Take Heart modules have a dedicated “kit” of materials for that module. The four modules can be paced according to the needs of the class and are intended to be delivered over a 6-8 week period. Each module and corresponding kit was designed using the latest evidence-based information. The lessons demonstrate how the Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core ideas of the NGSS are integrated into the curriculum. Structure and Function are tied to  homeostasis of the cardiac system while students ask questions and generate arguments about their health.

Students have opportunities to ask questions, plan and conduct an investigation, test a design, record and analyze data, apply scientific reasoning, develop, revise, and/or use a model to predict relationships, apply algebra, critically read scientific literature, and write explanatory narrations, throughout the integrative curriculum. Connections with anatomy, physiology, biotechnology, human body systems, and how these components interact with the environment. Students will discuss and implement lifestyle changes/personal behaviors that support heart health. Students learn to apply health promotion concepts with their parents and community by creating and implementing culturally relevant community outreach projects.

What People Are Saying

“Teen Take Heart modules allow our students to learn relevant, timely, and personal information about their cardiac health while infusing NGSS concepts and practices. The lessons are rigorous and are aligned with NGSS and CCSS. Not only do our students learn about cardiac health, but they also gain valuable career ideas.”

Ellen Ebert, Director of Science, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State.

“The Teen Take Heart curriculum is a fantastic opportunity for classroom teachers to meet state and national science and health academic expectations and integrate fun, hands-on lessons for their classrooms.”

— Colleen Dunegan, Ft. Vancouver High School

“I have really appreciated how Teen Take Heart is able to introduce so many of the new next-generation science standards into these well-organized lessons. The students are so engaged and come in wondering what cool activity we are going to get to do next. I am optimistic that these lessons can make a long-lasting impact on student perceptions about their need to live heart-healthy.”
